Out near Mandalay Beach in Oxnard, a surfboard shaper had a problem that didn't fit his schedule. His 2022 Jeep Cherokee had stopped communicating with its smart fob. Not dead, not stolen, just not talking. He knew enough about electronics to rule out a simple battery issue. He called the dealer anyway.
Thursday appointment. Drop the vehicle off, wait for the callback. That was three days out, and he had deliveries to make.
He found me online and called that morning. I pulled into his shop lot around noon.

The whole process from plug-in to confirmed engine start was right around 25 minutes, and most of that was the security handshake running its timed sequence in the background. There's no rushing that part.
He had a board loaded into his truck and was heading out for a delivery before I finished writing up the paperwork. He mentioned the dealer quote on the way out. It was a lot more than what he paid me, and came with a three-day wait attached to it.
I don't think he was thinking about the key five minutes later. That's exactly what a good job looks like.
