A guy from North Fillmore called me on a Saturday afternoon. He had taken his 1995 Jeep Cherokee out toward the hills west of town, parked at a dirt pullout near a trail, and somewhere between the truck and the ridge he lost his only key. No spare at home. Just him, the Cherokee, and a lot of quiet.
He had already called another locksmith who told him the ignition would need to be drilled and the cylinder replaced. That quote made him nervous enough to search for a second opinion.
I drove out to him. The Cherokee had been sitting in the sun long enough that the door lock cylinder was warm to the touch. I decoded the lock using a pick tool designed for these older wafer-style cylinders, reading each wafer position without pulling the cylinder or touching the ignition. The cut depths came back clean on the first pass.
I cut a replacement key blade to match and worked it through the door lock, then the ignition. Turned over on the first try.
He asked if there was anything else I needed to do. Programming, maybe? Nothing to program on this one. The key either fits the mechanical cuts or it does not.
