2006 Jeep Cherokee
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How does mobile key replacement work for a 2006 Jeep Cherokee?

Call or text with your year, make, model, and VIN. I confirm the correct key for your Cherokee and give you a price before I'm ever in the driveway. When I arrive, I pull the VIN from the dash or door jamb to verify everything matches, cut the key blade, handle the transponder and remote programming on site, and test every function before I hand it back. The whole job happens next to your car. No second trip, no drop-off.

Q: What do I need to have ready when you arrive?

Three things: your vehicle, a valid photo ID, and proof of ownership, your registration or title. I verify the VIN on site and match it to the key. That's it. Same documents a dealer would ask for, just without the wait. I confirm everything in the driveway and have you back on the road the same visit.

Q: My 2006 Cherokee fob stopped locking and unlocking but the key still starts the car. What's going on?

That split is actually pretty common on this generation. The remote functions and the ignition system run independently of each other. The transponder talks to the immobilizer at startup, and the lock and unlock signals broadcast on a separate frequency to the body control module. If the key starts the car fine but the buttons do nothing, start with the CR2032. A battery reading low on a meter can still test dead for the radio signal the fob sends.

Q: Can I just buy a replacement fob online and program it myself for a 2006 Cherokee?

The remote functions on the 2006 Cherokee can be programmed through an onboard sequence without a scan tool, as long as you still have at least one working programmed key. There's a specific ignition-turn procedure that puts the vehicle into program mode for the remote. The transponder side is a different story and does require professional equipment. If you're doing an all-keys-lost situation, the remote sequence won't work and you'll need a tech on site.

2006 Jeep Cherokee Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A woman near Woodcreek called about a 2006 Jeep Cherokee with a remote head key that had seen better days. The housing had split right at the blade pivot, and she was holding the fob together partly by habit and partly by hope. Dealer told her the whole key needed replacing and quoted her a number that made her stomach drop.

She drove it over to her duplex driveway and I met her there.

I opened the housing on the tailgate of my van. The board was clean, the transponder was intact, and every button contact looked fine. Nothing inside that housing was broken. The housing itself was the only casualty.

I transferred the board and chip into a fresh replacement shell, reseated the CR2032, and verified the blade fit. Then I walked every button, checked range from across the driveway, and confirmed the key started the vehicle without complaint.

She watched the whole thing in about the time it takes to scroll through your phone. When I handed it back, she pressed each button twice like she was testing it herself, which I always like to see.

The dealer wanted to replace parts that were never broken. We just fixed what actually was.
