1998 Jeep Cherokee
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Do I need to tow my Cherokee to the dealer for a replacement key?

No. The 1998 Cherokee uses a mechanical key, so there is no reason to tow it anywhere. A replacement can be cut on site from the original key or decoded directly from the lock. Dealers will sometimes steer you toward a tow-and-drop-off because that is their workflow, not because the job requires it. A mobile locksmith changes that entirely. I come to the vehicle, cut the key there, and you drive away.

Q: What do I need to show to prove I own the Jeep?

A valid photo ID and proof of ownership, either your registration or your title. I also verify the VIN from the dashboard plate or the door jamb sticker to confirm the vehicle matches before I cut anything. Same standard a dealer holds, just handled on the spot instead of at a service counter.

Q: My 1998 Cherokee ignition is worn and the key sometimes does not turn. Do I need a new key or a new cylinder?

Both are worth looking at together. These XJ ignition cylinders are well over two decades old at this point, and the wafers inside wear down over time. A worn cylinder can make even a correctly cut key feel like it is fighting you, especially on cold mornings. If your existing key works but feels loose or intermittent, the cylinder is the more likely culprit.

Q: Can I get a key made from the VIN if I have no working key at all?

Yes. For a 1998 Cherokee, the key code can be retrieved through proper locksmith channels using the VIN. That means even an all-keys-lost situation does not require towing the vehicle. I verify ownership, pull the key code, and cut a replacement on site. Older mechanical key vehicles like this one are actually simpler to handle in an all-keys-lost scenario than modern ones, because there is no electronic enrollment process involved. The cut key is the whole job.

1998 Jeep Cherokee Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was parked near the taco spot off Main in Santa Paula's East Area 2 when a guy walked up and asked if I was the locksmith he called. He had that look people get when they just got a number quoted at a dealership and needed a minute to process it.

He had picked up a 1998 Jeep Cherokee from a small lot. One key. The lot told him getting a spare would be easy. The dealer corrected that assumption fast and quoted him a price that stopped the conversation cold. He found me online and figured he would at least ask.

I pulled out the key blank that matched his Cherokee and decoded the cut from his original while he finished his food. A few minutes of work at my bench, and I had a duplicate cut and ready. Handed it to him, he walked to the Jeep and turned the ignition. Smooth.

He asked me why the dealer wanted so much for what is honestly a metal key. I told him dealers have overhead, flat rate labor, and they are not set up to compete on simple jobs. I am. He left with two working keys and paid a fraction of what the dealer wanted.
