Got a call from the East Area One neighborhood in Santa Paula. A woman with a 1999 Jeep Cherokee said her key was falling apart and the dealer quoted her a full replacement, cut and programmed. The thing is, her Cherokee's electronics were fine. The transponder chip worked. The immobilizer recognized it every time. The plastic housing had just split along the seam where the blade meets the head.
I drove out to her duplex driveway and looked at it on the hood. Classic Y160-PT key, the one with the black rubber head and the transponder wedge buried inside. The PCF7936 chip was sitting loose in the cracked shell but still intact. No corrosion on it, no damage.
I transferred the chip and circuit board into a fresh aftermarket shell, same profile, same fit. Then I decoded her original blade with my Lishi CY24 pick and cut a new one to match. Turned the ignition, the SKIM module picked up the chip on the first try, no P1685, no security light staying on. Engine fired right up.
She told me the dealer never mentioned the internals were reusable. They just said full replacement, no other option. That is a common line. The SKIM doesn't care what the shell looks like. It reads the PCF7936 and talks to the PCM. If those two agree, the engine starts. She kept her working guts in a new body and saved a good chunk doing it.
