A travel photographer staying at an Airbnb near Round Mountain Trail in Camarillo called me late one evening. She was between assignments, had one key for her 2000 Jeep Cherokee, and it had stopped turning the engine over. Cranked fine, just wouldn't catch. The SKIM light on the dash was solid, which told me everything before I even pulled my tools out.
Her key was a BY160-PT blank with the ID46 transponder chip inside. The chip wasn't dead, but the signal was weak enough that the SKIM antenna coil around the ignition cylinder wasn't reading it consistently. Classic symptom on these XJs. The coil picks up interference or the chip degrades just enough that you get a crank-no-start and that steady SKIM indicator.
I cut a fresh BY160-PT blank on my machine in the van, cloned the ID46 chip using my VVDI Key Tool, and verified the new key through OBD with the SKIM module. Whole thing, maybe 25 minutes in her driveway. I had her turn it over a few times cold, then again after letting it sit. No hesitation.
She had already called a dealer earlier that day. They told her to tow it in and quoted a wait of a couple days just to get the key ordered. She found me online instead and was driving again the same night.
Short version: three components. The blank, the cut, the programming. All done on site, for a fraction of what the dealer wanted.
