The immobilizer system inside your Jeep is the reason the key costs more than a hardware store copy. Every Jeep key since the early 2000s has a transponder chip embedded in the plastic head or the Fobik housing. When you turn the ignition or press the start button, the vehicle sends a radio signal to that chip. If the chip responds with the correct encrypted code, the engine starts. If not, the vehicle sits there.
