Stuck ignitions on older Jeeps are one of the most common calls I get, and dealers love turning a $200 fix into a $600 replacement. The Y159 ignition cylinder on Liberty, older Grand Cherokee, and Wrangler models wears down over time, especially with heavy keychains hanging off the key. The wafers loosen, the key starts catching, and eventually the owner thinks the whole ignition needs replacing.

An electrician at the oil change shop in Santa Barbara had been fighting his 1999 Jeep Wrangler ignition for weeks. Wiggling the key, pushing hard, sometimes waiting a minute for it to finally turn. He called the dealer and they quoted 334 for a new ignition cylinder, new key, and reprogramming. He was about to book it when the oil change tech mentioned me.
