July afternoon on Saviers Road in Oxnard. A woman called me from a parking lot near one of the shops on the strip. Her 2011 Kia Rio was locked, loaded with frozen groceries from a Costco run, and the smart key was dead in her hand.
She had been pressing the lock and unlock buttons over and over. Nothing. The dash was showing "Key is not detected" when she held the fob near the door. She called the dealer first. Earliest slot was the next afternoon.
I got there in about 20 minutes. Gained entry, plugged my IM608 into the OBD-II port under the dash. The fob's CR2032 was fully drained, but the real issue was that a jump start she had done the week before knocked the SMARTRA module out of sync with the key. That happens on these second-gen Rios more than people realize. The transponder ID was still stored, it just needed to be re-registered.
Pulled the security PIN through the diagnostics, ran the re-learn procedure, seated a fresh CR2032, and tested all four buttons plus push-button start from inside and outside the car. Then I walked each door handle to make sure passive entry responded.
From her phone call to engine running: 44 minutes. The groceries made it. The dealer would have taken a day and a lot more money.
