2017 Kia RIO Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Got a call from the Patterson Road corridor in Oxnard. Guy was loading his dog into the car at a boarding place off Patterson and the 2017 Rio just sat there. Push the start button, nothing. Dash blank. He tried holding the fob against the button, which is the backup move Kia describes in the owner's manual, and still nothing.

He had already watched one of my key replacement videos on YouTube before any of this happened. Said he saved my number months ago just in case. That part still gets me. Someone watches you work on a screen, then trusts you to show up and do it on their car.

I got there and opened up the SY5XMFNA04 fob on the hood. The CR2032 was not dead, but the plastic battery tray had a hairline crack and the cell was shifting around inside the shell. Intermittent contact. I swapped in a fresh CR2032, seated it right, and tested all four buttons: lock, unlock, trunk, panic. Then three start cycles. Then range from the gate.

His fob was fine. The dealer would have sold him a whole new 95440-2T510 unit and charged for programming on top of it. He kept his original key and drove off to his road trip a fraction of what they would have wanted.

My key blade broke off in the ignition of my 2017 Kia Rio. Can you get it out?▼

Yep. Broken key extraction is a bread-and-butter job. I use extractor picks to pull the broken HY20 blade out without scratching the ignition wafers. Once it is out, I can punch the old blade from the flip key housing and press a fresh one in. The Rio uses a standard KK12/HY20 profile that I stock on the van. If the transponder board inside the fob head is still good, I reuse it in a new shell and blade, no reprogramming needed. If the board is cracked, I cut and program a full replacement on site.
