The Wilson neighborhood in Oxnard isn't a place I usually get called to twice in one week, but that's what happened last spring.
A guy had a 2017 Kia Rio. He found me after watching a key replacement video and saving my number for when he'd actually need it. That moment came the week before a long road trip. The fob had been getting flaky for a few weeks, range dropping off, door handles sometimes not responding on the first touch. Then one morning it just stopped unlocking the car altogether. He could still start it if he pressed the fob directly against the button, but that's already a sign the battery or the fob itself is on the way out.
I pulled up to his place, popped the fob open right there on the hood of the Rio. The CR2032 tested low, which I expected. But the contacts inside the housing had a film of corrosion on them, thin enough to look fine at a glance but enough to kill the signal under normal use. Cleaned the contacts, seated a fresh CR2032, and tested every button including the lock, unlock, and the other two. Touch unlock on both front handles. Start. Ran it three times.
It came back to life on the first test.
He'd already gotten a quote from a dealer and was bracing for a full fob replacement plus programming time. He didn't need any of that. Just the right diagnosis and about fifteen minutes of actual work.
