A guy flagged me down in a parking lot off Ventura Road near Hueneme Beach. He had already been through it.
A different locksmith had come out earlier that week for his 2022 Kia Rio and charged him for a complete key replacement. The car would crank, fire for about two seconds, then die. Every time. The first guy told him the immobilizer module was faulty and that it needed a dealer repair. Then he left.
I've seen that pattern before and it has nothing to do with a bad module. What it usually means is that the key data got written to the system incompletely. The vehicle security system on these requires a specific PIN retrieval and a full registration sequence run through in the correct order. Skip a step or rush the confirmation, and the system accepts the new key temporarily but doesn't commit it. The car starts, the system checks its memory, finds nothing permanent, and shuts the engine down. Two seconds, every time.
I connected through the OBD port and pulled the current key status. Sure enough, the data from the first attempt was sitting in the system in a half-written state. I cleared it out, retrieved the proper security PIN, and ran the full registration sequence clean from the beginning. Confirmed the write, tested the start, walked every one of the four fob buttons.
The car started and stayed running. He stood there for a second like he wasn't sure he trusted it yet.
The dealer quote he'd already gotten was well over what I charged, and he'd already paid the first locksmith on top of that. I don't bring that up to score points. I bring it up because a job done wrong twice costs more than a job done right once.
