Out in Windsor North, near the River Ridge side of Oxnard, I got a call from a guy who stocked shelves overnight at a warehouse and needed his car working before his shift.
He had already paid another locksmith to cut and program a key for his 2018 Kia Rio about ten days earlier. For the first few days it was fine. Then it started acting strange. Morning shift, the car would start no problem. By the time he got off and walked back out to the lot, push-to-start would flash a key-not-detected warning and sit there. He would try again, wait, try again. Sometimes it would catch. Sometimes he was standing in a parking lot at 6 a.m. with nowhere to be.
He figured it was an electrical gremlin. Maybe a module. He was already pricing out a tow to the dealer.
I plugged in and read the key that had been cut. The transponder chip inside was the wrong generation. Not wildly wrong, close enough that the immobilizer accepted it at first enrollment, but the car's security system kept running verification over subsequent drive cycles and eventually started rejecting it intermittently. That intermittent part is what made it hard to pin down.
I programmed a new key with the correct chip. Before I handed it back, I also cracked the fob open and found the CR2032 sitting slightly off-center. Not dead, just weak enough to make detection inconsistent at the margins. Fresh battery, proper seating, contacts cleaned.
He texted me the next week. No issues.
The dealer quote he had pulled while he was troubleshooting this himself was a lot more than what he paid me. And the dealer wanted the car towed in and estimated a two-to-three day turnaround just to get it on a tech's schedule.
