I got a call from a rideshare driver parked near the South Surfside area of Port Hueneme. He'd already been burned once.
Some outfit from a low-bid Google ad had come out, charged him a lot, and left him with a key that half worked. The remote locked and unlocked fine. But every time he sat down and pressed the start button, the dash threw a key-not-detected warning and the car wouldn't start. He'd been borrowing rides to his shifts for two days.
He found me through Google Guaranteed and his first question wasn't "how much." It was "how do I know you're legit." Fair. I gave him my BSIS license number right there on the phone and told him to pull it up on the state site while we were still talking. He did. That's exactly what he should do.
When I got to him, the picture was clear. The previous guy had paired the remote side of the fob but never finished the immobilizer registration. The car recognized the buttons but didn't recognize the fob as an authorized key for starting. Classic incomplete job.
I connected through the OBD port, pulled the security PIN by VIN, ran the full registration sequence, and verified all four buttons plus the start function before I packed up. Walked him through holding the fob to the start button during the confirmation step, which is just part of how the Rio's system works. Took about 40 minutes total, most of that being the timed reset the system requires.
He'd already paid the first guy. He wasn't thrilled about paying again, and I get it. But he said what he paid me was still less than what the dealer quoted him when he called them in a panic the morning after the bad job. I just made sure he left with a key that actually worked.
