A Bridle Path resident called me on a Tuesday morning. She had walked out to her 2010 Range Rover Sport, and the vehicle would not acknowledge the fob at all. The dash was showing a key-not-detected warning, the push-to-start wasn't responding, and she was standing in her driveway with nowhere to be.
She had already been through the dealer conversation. They told her the fob would need to be ordered, that it could take time to arrive, and that she should plan on not having the vehicle for a while. The quote they gave her covered the key itself but not the wait, not the tow she would have needed to get it there without a working key, and not the rental car days in between. By the time she added all of that up in her head, she started looking for another way.
I came to her in Bridle Path. Pulled the old fob apart right on the hood of the truck, and the CR2032 inside looked like it had been in there since the vehicle was new. Replaced it, reseated the contacts, and tested range. Still not right. The vehicle needed a new fob, properly cut and registered.
I had the blank, cut the blade to the vehicle on site, and ran the programming through the diagnostic port with JLR-compatible equipment. The whole process took about 45 minutes, including the time I spent walking every button and confirming the vehicle recognized the key across different scenarios.
She asked me at the end why the dealer made it sound so complicated. I told her it genuinely is more involved than a basic transponder job, but it doesn't have to mean a week without your truck. The dealer route has its place. It just wasn't the only option she had.
