A call came in from Big Sky on a Tuesday morning. A guy had been stranded in his driveway for two days with a 2011 Range Rover Sport that would not acknowledge the fob at all. He had already been to an auto parts store, gotten a new CR2032, swapped it in, and nothing changed. The dash kept showing a key warning every time he got near the vehicle.
When I pulled up, he walked me through what he had tried. New battery, key was sitting right on the center console, nothing. He had even called the Land Rover dealer in the area and was told they needed the vehicle brought in for diagnosis before they could even order a key. Then parts lead time on top of that.
I opened the fob on the hood of my service van and looked at the battery contacts first. The positive contact had a slight downward bow to it, probably from someone prying the case open with a flathead instead of the correct spot. The new CR2032 was barely making contact. I reset the contact, seated the battery correctly, and closed it up.
Still flagged. At that point I connected to the OBD port, ran a read on the key and vehicle module, and saw the fob had dropped out of registration, likely because the module lost confidence in the key during the dead-battery period. That happens on these. It is not a defective key, it is just how the system responds to a prolonged power interruption in the fob.
Re-registration through the diagnostic tool, then walked every function: door handles, buttons, emergency blade in the lock cylinder, everything. The Range Rover came back to life exactly as it should.
He mentioned the dealer estimate he had been given over the phone before calling me. He ended up paying a fraction of what they quoted, without moving the vehicle an inch.
