2015 Land Rover Range Rover Sport
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Does the dealer really require a tow for a lost-key situation on a Range Rover Sport?

Usually, yes. If there's no working key in the system, most Land Rover dealers won't let you drive it in and won't do the key work remotely. That means a flatbed before anyone even looks at the job. Then parts get ordered, the module work gets scheduled, and you're without the car for however long that takes. We come to the vehicle. The work gets done at your location in Simi Valley.

Q: What do I need to show to prove I own the vehicle?

A valid photo ID and proof of ownership, either your registration or your title. We also confirm the VIN directly from the dashboard plate or the door jamb sticker on your Range Rover Sport to match the key specs to the car. That's standard practice for any locksmith or dealer doing this kind of work. We verify everything on-site. It takes a few minutes, not a separate appointment just to confirm paperwork before anything gets ordered.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online. Can you just program it to my 2015 Range Rover Sport?

Possibly, but there are a few things to check first. The fob needs to match the factory FCC ID for your specific vehicle. Aftermarket or gray-market fobs that look identical can have compatibility issues with the key management module on this generation, and some won't pair regardless of what the listing said. Owners on Land Rover forums have reported buying fobs that simply wouldn't register, even with professional equipment.

Q: My Range Rover Sport key fob range has gotten terrible. Is the fob going bad or is something else going on?

Start with the CR2032. Short range is the first symptom of a low battery on this fob, and it shows up well before a dead-battery warning does. Seat the new cell flat against both contacts when you replace it. If range is still short after a fresh battery, the fob antenna or internal board can degrade, especially on a fob that's been dropped or gotten wet.

2015 Land Rover Range Rover Sport Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was parked off to the side of a street in the Simi Hills when the owner of a 2015 Range Rover Sport walked up and handed me a fob that looked completely fine. No cracks, no obvious damage.

She had already put a new CR2032 in it herself. The car was giving her a key-not-detected warning and the touch-unlock on the driver door handle was dead. Passenger side worked. Start button worked, but only if she held the fob close to it.

I opened the fob right there on the hood. The battery contact on the positive side had a small upward bow to it, just enough that the new CR2032 was sitting slightly off-plane. The cell was making contact, barely, which is why the car could sometimes read it and sometimes couldn't. I straightened the contact, cleaned both sides with a dry cloth, reseated the battery, and closed it back up.

Then I walked every door. Driver handle touch unlock came right back. All five buttons tested clean. Start button read the fob at normal distance without her having to hover it.

She had been about to call the dealer, which would have meant driving the car in on a sometimes-works key, or worse, getting it towed. The repair here took maybe twenty minutes, on-site in the Simi Hills, for a fraction of what that trip would have cost her.

She didn't need a new fob. She needed the right small fix done in the right place.
