2017 Land Rover Range Rover Sport
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How does mobile smart key replacement actually work for a 2017 Range Rover Sport?

You call, give me the year, make, model, and VIN. I confirm the correct fob for your vehicle and give you a price before I leave. When I arrive, I verify the VIN against your registration or door jamb, cut the emergency blade to your vehicle, and program the new smart key using JLR-compatible diagnostic equipment through the OBD port.

Q: What do I need to have ready when you show up?

Three things: the vehicle, a valid photo ID, and proof of ownership - registration or title works. I pull the VIN from the dash or door jamb to confirm the right key specs for your exact vehicle. Same verification standard a dealer would run, done on site in a few minutes instead of requiring a separate appointment just to confirm the order.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2017 Range Rover Sport. Can I program it myself?

No. The 2017 Range Rover Sport smart key requires professional diagnostic equipment to register a new fob to the vehicle. There is no button sequence, no ignition-cycle trick, no onboard self-programming option. That kind of DIY relearn exists on some older vehicles with basic transponder keys in an ignition cylinder - it does not apply here. The fob you bought online is likely the correct physical unit, and buying it ahead of time isn't necessarily wrong.

Q: What happens if I've lost all keys to my 2017 Range Rover Sport and have nothing left?

All-keys-lost on this vehicle is a bigger job than a spare-key add, but it's a standard one. The process wipes the existing key memory and registers the new fob fresh. Any previously paired fobs - including the lost ones - get erased so they can no longer start the car. You end up with a clean slate and a working key.

2017 Land Rover Range Rover Sport Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy over in the Royal/Kadota area of Simi Valley. His 2017 Range Rover Sport was sitting in his driveway showing a key-not-detected warning on the dash. He'd already swapped the CR2032 himself - correct battery, installed right - and the car still wasn't seeing the fob.

He'd already called the dealer before he called me. They told him they'd need to order parts and that he should plan on leaving the vehicle for several days, possibly longer. He asked if he could drive it in. They said he'd need a working key to do that. He didn't have one. So that was the conversation that ended with him calling me instead.

I pulled up to his driveway with everything already loaded. The fob was genuinely dead - not a battery issue, not a contact issue. The fob itself had failed. That happens on these. It's not common but it's not rare either.

Cut the replacement blade, registered the new smart key to the vehicle through the OBD port using JLR-compatible programming equipment, tested the lock and unlock, walked both door handles, confirmed the dash was reading the key cleanly, and handed it back to him.

He mentioned the dealer quote again as I was packing up. I told him what I charged. He got quiet for a second and then said something about the tow alone would have cost him half of that.

He was right.

Land Rover Range Rover Sport Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I need to bring my 2017 Land Rover Range Rover Sport somewhere to get a replacement key?▼

No. EZ Car Keyz is fully mobile. I come to wherever the vehicle is - your driveway, your workplace, a parking lot in the Royal/Kadota area of Simi Valley. You don't move the car at all. The dealer situation is the opposite. If you have a working key, you can drive it in and wait.
