2019 Lincoln Nautilus Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
A traveling consultant was staying at a hotel off the 101 in Thousand Oaks, out here near Conejo Oaks, when her only Nautilus key went dark. No warning, no gradual fade. She clicked it in the lobby, nothing. Tried it at the door handle, nothing. The car just sat there.
The hotel front desk pointed her to the Lincoln dealer. They told her to have it towed in, said the earliest they could see her was the following afternoon, and quoted her a number that made her pause. She also had no way to get it towed without the key to put it in neutral. She found me instead.
I met her in the hotel parking lot that same evening. Before I touched anything else, I asked when she last changed the fob battery. She couldn't remember. I popped the fob housing, pulled both CR2025 cells, and one of them had a visible ring of corrosion on the negative face. Fresh pair in, repositioned the contacts, and we tested it right there in the lot. The door handle touch responded. The fob locked and unlocked clean.
That was it. No programming, no OBD hookup, no tow. Just a fob that needed two new batteries and a contact wipe.
She saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer quoted for a full replacement, and she didn't lose a day. The lesson I keep seeing with these: the two-cell setup bites people because one cell going bad can mask what looks like a dead fob. Always replace both at the same time.
