Got a call around 9:40 on a Thursday night from someone stuck near CSU Channel Islands in Camarillo. Their 1998 ML320 wouldn't start. Key turned, dash lit up, nothing from the engine. Just the immobilizer light sitting there solid.
They had already called the Mercedes dealer. Closed since 5. Tried two other locksmiths. No answer. We picked up because that is literally the job. Open until 11:30, seven days.
When I got there, the owner was sitting on the curb next to the ML, holding the key like it had personally wronged them. I asked if the key had gotten wet or taken a hit recently. Turns out it slipped off a counter onto tile the day before. Felt fine after, so they didn't think about it.
Opened the remote head key on my work mat. The transponder board inside had a hairline crack near the IR emitter. The 5WK47283 module in these is not the most durable thing Mercedes ever built. The plastic housing absorbs some shock, but a hard drop on the right angle will do it.
I had the replacement parts on the van. Cut the new HU64 blade to match, programmed the transponder to the EIS, synced the remote, and tested all four buttons plus the start. Took about 35 minutes total.
They just sat there watching the engine idle like they expected it to quit again. It didn't.
