Got a call from a guy in Downtown Oxnard with a 2013 ML350. Key stopped turning the EIS module on. Dashboard dead, no crank, nothing. He said the dealer told him to tow it in and leave it for three to five business days because they needed to verify the EIS/EZS module on the N172 board before ordering parts.
He did not want to tow it. He wanted to drive it home.
I got there in about twenty minutes. Pulled the emergency blade out of the IYZ-3312 fob and checked the shell. The CR2025 looked fine at first glance, but when I popped the board out, there was a thin green line of corrosion running right along the NEC chip soldering and across one battery terminal pad. Classic moisture damage. The key had been sitting in a cup holder that collected condensation from a leaky sunroof drain, something he mentioned almost as an afterthought.
Cleaned the board contacts, replaced the CR2025, reseated everything. Slid it into the EIS and the dash lit up like nothing ever happened. Did a full cycle: lock, unlock, panic, trunk release on all four buttons, then start and shut down twice.
He just stood there watching the instrument cluster, waiting for it to go dark again.
Whole thing took maybe thirty minutes at his parking spot. He kept the tow truck money and drove home.
