Got a call from Oxnard Shores on a Saturday morning. Guy had a 2008 ML350 sitting in his driveway with one key that was only working every third try. Sometimes the dash would flash "Key not recognized" and kill the crank. Other times it fired right up like nothing was wrong.
He told me the dealer quoted him a week's wait and mentioned possibly replacing the entire EIS module. He was already looking at rental cars.
I pulled up and tested the key first. The CR2025 was low but not dead. Swapped it. Same intermittent behavior. So I connected to the EIS through the OBD port and read the module. The NEC chip inside the EIS was still healthy, no corruption on the key slot data. The issue was the key itself. The transponder area on the fob's board had a hairline crack near the antenna coil, probably from being dropped on tile or concrete one too many times.
Cut and programmed a fresh remote head key with the IYZ-3312 fob, verified all four buttons, cycled the ignition three times, and confirmed the old intermittent key was erased from the system.
He sat on his porch the whole time watching. When the ML started clean on the first turn, he just nodded and said "that's it?" Like he expected it to be harder.
Twenty-two minutes, one trip, done in the driveway.
