Got a call from a guy out in Hollywood Beach in Oxnard. His 2009 Mercedes-Benz ML-Class wouldn't turn over and the dash was throwing "Key not recognized" at him. He was parked on one of those narrow residential streets near the sand, AC off, windows down, dog in the back seat looking annoyed.

Cut a fresh IYZ-3312 blank on my portable machine, moved the programmed internals into the new housing, dropped in a fresh CR2025, and tested the transponder read through the OBD port to make sure the EIS was handshaking clean. Then ran all four buttons: lock, unlock, trunk, panic. Walked around the ML and hit each one from fifteen feet, then thirty.
He kept looking at the dog like he was explaining what happened. The dog did not care.
Whole thing was done in about twenty-five minutes. No tow to the dealer, no three-to-five-day wait for them to order a blank and schedule him in. Just handled it right there on the street.
