Got a call from someone stuck near the Commemorative Air Force Museum in Camarillo. His 1999 ML320 had one key left and it finally gave up. Turned in the ignition, dash stayed dark, no crank. He was already looking up tow trucks.

When I got there, the key blade was worn down pretty good and the infrared window on the fob had a haze over it from years of pocket lint and hand grime. The CR2025 inside was original. Not a replacement. The actual battery Mercedes put in at the factory, still sitting in there after all those years. Corroded contact pads and everything.
I pulled the EIS data through the OBD port, got the key profile, and cut a fresh blade on the HU64 blank right on site. Cleaned up the infrared emitter, dropped in a new CR2025, and tested the transponder communication with the EIS. Then I walked every button on the remote: lock, unlock, trunk, panic. All four responding.
He sat on his tailgate watching the whole thing and at one point just said, "I really thought this car was done."
It wasn't done. It just needed a key that wasn't running on a twenty-five-year-old battery. He drove home, no tow, no dealer appointment, no two-week wait for a part shipped from Stuttgart.
