Got a call from a guy in the Rio Lindo neighborhood in Oxnard. His 2000 ML320 had been sitting in the driveway for two days because the key would turn in the ignition but the immobilizer killed the start every time. Dash showed the little car-and-key icon, engine cranked for half a second, then nothing. Classic EIS-to-key communication failure on these W163s.
He had already called the Mercedes dealer. They told him it would need to be towed in, the key ordered from Germany, and he was looking at possibly two weeks before he could drive it again. He found my number instead.
I pulled up and opened the fob first. The CR2025 was corroded on one side, and the IR window on the key housing had a film of grime over it. Cleaned the contacts, replaced the battery, wiped the IR lens with alcohol. Turned the key. Same thing. Immobilizer still blocking.
So I went deeper. Connected to the EIS module through the OBD-II port with my diagnostic setup, read the key data, and found the transponder sync had drifted. Re-adapted the key to the EIS, cleared the immobilizer fault, and let the system do its handshake.
It started on the first turn. He just sat there for a second with his hands on the wheel like he was making sure it was real.
One visit, in his driveway, for a fraction of what the dealer quoted just for the tow.
