Got a call from a guy over in Mandalay State Beach in Oxnard. His 2006 ML350 had one working key left, and the chrome side plate on the fob was already cracking where the key ring loop sits. He said he'd been nursing it for months, afraid to look at it too hard.

He had called the Mercedes dealer first. They told him to bring the vehicle in, leave it, and expect three to five business days. He works out of his truck. Leaving it somewhere was not an option.

I showed up, pulled the key blank, and cut the HU64 blade on my portable machine right on his driveway. Plugged into the OBD-II port and connected to the EIS module for the transponder programming. The W164 runs an FBS3 security platform, so the key registration goes through the EIS and talks to the ESL steering lock module and the ME engine control unit. All three have to agree before the car starts. Whole process ran about 25 minutes.

The part he kept coming back to was just watching it happen in his driveway. No shuttle ride, no rental, no waiting by the phone. He held the new key, hit the remote, heard the locks cycle, started the engine, and that was it.

He still had that cracked original in his pocket. I told him to keep it as a backup and swap the shell before the hinge gives out completely.
