An overnight stocker called me from a taco truck lot off Oxnard Boulevard in the RiverPark neighborhood around 11 at night. His only key to his 2010 Cube was gone. He was already looking up tow trucks.
He didn't have his registration on him and had no idea what a VIN was. I kept him on the phone. Told him to look through the windshield at the base of the glass, driver's side. He found it. Under the parking lot lights I used my diagnostic tool to do an all-keys-lost procedure through the OBD port, generated and registered a new Intelligent Key to his BCM, and cut the mechanical blade on site. The whole process ran about 35 minutes. Most of that was the NATS registration handshake doing its timed steps.
He got quiet once the engine turned over. Just sat there for a second with his hands on the wheel. Then he said something about how he thought the car was staying in that lot overnight.
He drove home. A dealer would have been closed, needed a tow, and taken days. He was back on the road the same night for a fraction of what they would have charged.
