She was in a valet lot near Hobson Park in Oxnard for a birthday, and someone grabbed her purse off the table. Phone, wallet, car keys, all of it. She borrowed a friend's phone, called the police, then her roommate, then me.
Her 2011 Nissan Cube was sitting in the lot with zero keys to its name. The dealer told her roommate they could order a fob, but it would take three to five business days, the car would need to be towed in, and they strongly suggested re-securing the vehicle since the stolen key could still operate the doors. The combined estimate her roommate relayed to me was well over what anyone wanted to hear on a Friday night.
All-keys-lost after a theft is a different job than adding a spare. The priority isn't just getting her a working key, it's making sure the stolen one is dead. I connected my diagnostic equipment through the OBD port, cleared the entire key memory, and registered two new fobs from scratch. That wipe is the step that matters most in a theft situation. The stolen fob is now a useless plastic rectangle to this car.
I also decoded the door lock and cut the emergency blade so she had a physical backup in case the fob battery ever dies on her.
Both fobs were tested, all three buttons confirmed, door handle proximity working, blade opening the door manually. Done before her roommate pulled into the lot.
She drove home that night. The dealer route was days away, required a tow, and was going to cost her a good chunk more. The stolen key is completely locked out of the system.
