A call came in from a guy parked near his place in the Peach Hill neighborhood of Moorpark. He had his 2013 Nissan Cube, and his fob had gone completely dark. No lock, no unlock, nothing. He had gotten into the car the old way, using the mechanical blade tucked inside the fob, but the push-button start wouldn't wake up. He was convinced he needed a new fob programmed and was already bracing for dealer pricing.
When I pulled up, he handed me the fob and I could feel the case flex on one side. Someone had pried it open at some point, probably to swap the battery, and the clip was broken. The CR2032 inside was seated crooked, making contact on one edge only. Enough to technically sit in the slot, not enough to power the fob reliably.
I swapped in a fresh CR2032, got the case seated as cleanly as the broken clip would allow, and wrapped a small piece of electrical tape around the seam to hold pressure on the battery. Not a permanent fix for the housing, but enough to confirm whether the fob itself was still good before we talked about replacing anything.
Walked through every button. Locked, unlocked, confirmed the push-button start recognized the fob from the driver's seat and from outside the vehicle. Everything worked.
He didn't need a new fob. He needed someone to look at the actual problem instead of just quoting him a replacement. The dealer would have handed him a number and a scheduling window. I handed him his key back, working, same parking lot, same afternoon.
