Got a call from a guy out near the Tierra Rejada Open Space in Moorpark. His 2013 Cube was sitting in the driveway doing nothing. Push the start button, dash lights up with "Key System Error," engine won't crank. He had already swapped the CR2032 twice.
When I got there he was standing next to it holding the fob like it personally wronged him. He told me the dealer wanted him to tow it in, leave it for a day or two, and they would run a CONSULT III Plus session to diagnose and possibly replace the Intelligent Key module, BCM board 284B2-1FC0A, or both. Open-ended quote, no ceiling.
I plugged in and pulled NATS data through the OBD port. The fob's 46 chip was registering intermittently. Opened the CWTWB1U808 housing and found the problem: the battery contact leaf on the board was flattened out just enough that the CR2032 was losing connection with any vibration. Tiny bend, big symptom. I reshaped the contact, cleaned the board pads, seated a fresh CR2032, and re-registered the fob through the BCM.
Start button, engine caught first press. Tested lock, unlock, panic, and the Intelligent Key antenna detection at all four doors plus the trunk. Everything responded clean.
He kept looking at the dash like it might throw the error again. It didn't. Whole thing took about 25 minutes, right in his driveway, for a fraction of what the dealer route would have cost.
