GM's immobilizer system is the reason your key costs more than a house key. Every Chevrolet since the early 2000s has a transponder chip embedded in the key or fob. When you turn the ignition or press the start button, the car sends a radio signal to that chip. If the chip responds with the right security code, the engine starts. If not, you get a "service theft deterrent" message and nothing happens. That's why you can't just copy a Chevy key at the hardware store.
A customer at the Walmart near Granite Hills thought only the dealer could program that chip. She had a 1997 Chevrolet Malibu and needed a spare. The dealer quoted $200 and she assumed that was her only choice because of the "computer" involved. Her coworker had used me before and passed along my number.
I brought my Smart Pro to her car and walked through the immobilizer registration sequence. Her Malibu uses a B111-PT transponder key, FCC ID , with the classic GM Z-keyway blade. The Smart Pro connects through the OBD port, reads the security PIN, and learns the new key to the body control module.
Her spare was cut, programmed, and tested in about 25 minutes. Total was around $95. The technology inside the key is real, but the dealer markup on that technology isn't justified when a mobile locksmith carries the same programming tools.
