2017 Chevrolet Malibu Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Downtown IB on a weeknight is quiet in the way beach towns get after the tourists clear out. Parking lots half empty, ocean noise, nobody around.
A woman staying near the waterfront called me after her fob stopped responding. Not slowly, not intermittently. Just stopped. She pressed the door handle sensor, nothing. Tried the start button, nothing. The dash gave her a key-not-detected warning and that was the end of the conversation with her car.
She had already called the dealer. They told her to tow it in and they'd get to it the following afternoon. She didn't have the following afternoon.
I got there and started the same way I always do: pulled the emergency blade from inside the fob body, used the manual cylinder to get the door open, and got inside the vehicle. Once I could check things properly, I confirmed the fob battery had dropped below useful voltage. CR2032, looked fine visually, tested weak.
Fresh battery and reseated contacts got the fob talking again at short range, but not reliably. The key had other issues beyond the battery. She needed a replacement fob cut and programmed to her car.
I pulled up the diagnostic equipment, connected at the OBD port, and registered the new fob to the vehicle's security system. Cut the emergency blade to match. Tested every function: door handles, start button, all five buttons on the fob face.
She had a morning meeting. She made it.
The dealer quote was still sitting in her phone when she handed me the payment. She said the number made more sense now that she'd seen what the job actually involved. I didn't argue with that.
