2001 Chevrolet Malibu Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
I got a call from a woman in The Crosby area of Rancho Santa Fe. Her 2001 Chevrolet Malibu fob had stopped working and she had been manually unlocking the car with the key blade for about two weeks. She figured a dealer visit was the only option and had already looked up appointment availability.
She had three things going on when I arrived: dead fob, no spare, and a vague worry that something was wrong with the car itself because the security light had been flickering at startup.
I started with the obvious. Swapped the CR2032 with a fresh one and tested all four buttons. Lock, unlock, trunk release, panic. Nothing. Battery was not the issue.
The fob itself had some visible wear around the case seam, the kind that happens when someone pries it open with a screwdriver instead of a plastic tool. The battery contacts inside had a slight bend and one had a faint corrosion spot. Cleaned the contacts, reseated them, and put in another fresh CR2032 correctly this time. Tested again.
Lock and unlock came back. Trunk release came back. Panic worked.
The security light flickering at startup was a separate conversation. I explained the difference between a fob issue and the vehicle security system behaving oddly, and that the two were not connected in this case. She appreciated knowing what she was actually dealing with.
She had called the dealer before calling me. They quoted her a new fob plus programming and told her the earliest appointment was six days out. She paid a fraction of that and was back to a fully working remote before lunch.
