I was already wrapping up in Lemon Grove near the Encanto Border side when the call came in. A woman had finished dinner, walked out to her Malibu, and the key fob was completely dead. No remote unlock, nothing. She got in with the flip blade, but the engine would start, run for about two seconds, and immediately stall. She tried three times. Same result every time.
That stall pattern is the immobilizer doing exactly what it is supposed to do. The car sees a blade turning in the cylinder but the transponder in the fob is not communicating. Engine lights up, security system kills it.
I pulled up beside her in the lot. First thing I did was pop the fob and check the CR2032. It was original. The voltage was so low the chip side was not transmitting enough to complete the handshake with the receiver. Swapped the battery. Tried the key. Still stalling.
That told me the transponder had dropped out of the vehicle's memory entirely, which can happen when a fob sits on a near-dead battery long enough. The chip loses its pairing. The car does not know it anymore.
I connected my diagnostic tool to the OBD port, pulled up the immobilizer, and enrolled the existing fob as a recognized key. Took about twenty minutes. Turned the key, engine started and stayed running.
She had already looked up the dealer while we were standing there. They wanted her to tow it in and come back the next day. She was back on the road before the lot lights even felt necessary.
