That crank-and-stall pattern is the classic symptom of the immobilizer not recognizing the key. The engine gets fuel to fire because the crank signal is fine, but the security system cuts it back almost instantly when the chip doesn't authenticate. Check the dash when you try to start it. A security-related warning that flickers on and stays lit after the stall is a strong indicator you're dealing with the immobilizer, not a fuel or ignition issue.

The most common causes on a 2005 Malibu are a worn key where the chip has shifted inside the head, a key that was never properly programmed to this specific car, or a failing antenna ring on the ignition collar that can't read the chip reliably. The antenna ring is a component I check on site when this pattern comes up. If the key is good and the ring is good, then we're looking deeper at the immobilizer module itself, but that's less common.

Can I program a second transponder key myself on a 2005 Malibu if I still have one working key?

This generation does have an onboard relearn sequence, but it requires two already-programmed working keys to add a third.
