2008 Chevrolet Malibu
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2008 Chevrolet Malibu Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was parked on Broadway in Downtown Lemon Grove finishing up some notes when the call came in. Guy had a 2008 Malibu, one key, and his teenage kid had snapped the head off trying to pull it out of the ignition with a key ring still attached. The blade was fine. The chip inside the broken head was the question.

I drove over and found him standing next to the car with the broken pieces in his hand, which was actually the best-case scenario. I was able to recover the transponder chip from the cracked shell intact, confirm it was undamaged, and transfer the information I needed from it before cutting a new key blank to the vehicle.

Because we had the original chip to work with, I could move forward without a full all-keys-lost procedure. That saved him time on site. I cut the blade, programmed the new key, and tested it through several start cycles before calling it done.

He asked about the dealer almost as an aside, the way people do when they already know the answer. I told him what I usually tell people: call them if you want to, but you're looking at waiting days for a parts order and then a service appointment on top of that, for a lot more money. He just nodded.

The whole thing was done before the lunch crowd filled up the spots on Broadway.
