I got a call from a guy over in East Lemon Grove, off to the side of one of those quieter residential streets that backs up to the main drag.
His 2020 Malibu was sitting in the driveway and he'd been dealing with an on-again-off-again start issue for about two weeks. Some mornings the car would throw a key-not-detected warning, he'd hold the fob closer to the start button, and it would eventually fire. Other mornings it started without a complaint.
He'd already replaced the fob battery himself. Standard CR2032, correct brand, he showed me the packaging. Still acting up.
When I got there and looked at the fob, the battery swap had been done right but the contact on the negative side had a tiny amount of surface corrosion, probably from the old battery sitting in there too long before it died. The new battery was making marginal contact, enough to work sometimes, not enough to work reliably.
I cleaned the contact points, reseated the battery, and ran a full check: all five buttons at distance, passive entry on both front door handles, and confirmed the vehicle security system was reading the key cleanly through the diagnostic port with no stored faults pointing to the fob itself.
Everything cleared. He started the car four times in a row, walked away, came back, no warnings.
He mentioned the dealer had told him over the phone that intermittent smart key issues usually meant a fob replacement and possibly a security system resync, and they'd quoted him a number that made him pause long enough to look for another option. He didn't need any of that. He needed clean contacts and someone willing to check the actual source of the problem before recommending parts.
