1998 Dodge Durango
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What kind of key does the 1998 Dodge Durango actually use?

Straight metal key. No remote, no fob, no buttons. You put it in the lock and turn it. That is the whole system for this year. It can be duplicated by key code or by decoding the lock cylinder directly. The key blade is what matters, and getting the cut right on a worn original is where a professional makes the difference over a hardware store copy.

Q: What do you actually use to make a replacement key for this truck?

For a 1998 Durango the work is mechanical. I decode the lock cylinder or pull the key code, then cut the replacement on my cutting machine. No diagnostic tool, no laptop, no programming involved. The right equipment here is a quality code cutter and a decoder that can read a worn lock accurately. That is what gets you a key that works on the first insert rather than one that binds halfway in.

Q: Can I get a replacement key made if I have no working key at all?

Yes. All-keys-lost on a 1998 Durango is a mechanical problem, not an electronic one. I can decode the lock cylinder directly at your vehicle, derive the correct cut, and produce a working key on site without needing your original. The door lock and the ignition cylinder both hold the cut information. As long as the lock has not been drilled or damaged, the code is readable.

Q: My key turns but feels rough or stiff in the ignition. Should I just get a new key cut?

Maybe, but check the obvious first. Worn wafers inside the ignition cylinder can cause stiffness even with the correct key, and a badly worn original that has been copied a few generations down the line will feel rough because the cut has drifted from spec. A fresh key cut directly from the lock code, not copied from a worn original, will tell you whether the issue is the key or the cylinder.

1998 Dodge Durango Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy in Montgomery flagged me down on a Thursday afternoon. He was standing next to a 1998 Dodge Durango in the parking lot of the muffler shop he works at, holding half a key.

The blade had snapped off in the door lock. He had the other half in his hand and a look on his face that said he already knew this was going to cost him his lunch break.

He had already called the dealer. They told him they could get him in, but it would take time and he would need to leave the truck.

I pulled up, decoded the door lock, and cut a replacement key right there on the lot. Tested it in the door, tested it in the ignition. Both worked clean on the first try. He was back inside the shop before his coffee went cold.

The dealer comparison came up on its own. He just shook his head and said he would have lost most of a day waiting. Coming to him saved all of that.

Dodge Durango Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How do I spot a fake locksmith before I get ripped off?▼

A few things to watch for. If the price on the phone is dramatically lower than what every other locksmith quotes, that gap usually shows up again on site as added fees. Look for a real business name on the van, a physical address you can verify, and a license number if they are operating in California. Ask before they come out whether they have handled a 1998 Dodge Durango before.
