2001 Dodge Durango
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2001 Dodge Durango Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was up in Ramona Highlands on a Tuesday afternoon, parked in the shade on a quiet street, when I got a call from a guy who lives up there. He had a 2001 Dodge Durango, and he had already driven to the hardware store once that week. A copy shop key. Wrong move.

He had gotten a key cut at a hardware kiosk, slid it in, and it turned fine. Engine cranked, ran for about two seconds, then died. He tried it four times before he stopped. That stall-out pattern is almost always the immobilizer doing its job. The key blade was cut right, but there was no chip, so the security system shut the engine down every single time.

I pulled up behind the Durango and got the new transponder key cut to match his vehicle. Then I ran the programming sequence to register the chip. The Durango fired up and idled steady. He held the key like he was expecting it to stall again. It did not.

He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a wait of several days just to get an appointment. I was there and done in under an hour, parked right on his street. The hardware store key became a paperweight that day, but at least it confirmed his ignition cylinder was fine.
