2014 Dodge Durango
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How do I know you are not a scam locksmith?

The pattern with scam locksmiths is consistent: low number on the phone, a different number when they're standing next to your car. It happens on smart key jobs especially, because the customer doesn't know what the work involves and can't push back on a made-up price. We give you a real number for your 2014 Dodge Durango before we leave for the job. That number doesn't change when we arrive.

Q: Will the replacement key work exactly like the original?

Yes. Once a new fob is programmed and registered to your 2014 Durango's immobilizer, it behaves the same way the factory key does. The engine starts, the doors respond, and the remote functions work as expected. We test everything on site before we leave, including walking each door and confirming the vehicle is recognizing the fob at normal operating range, not just when you're holding it inches from the start button.

Q: My 2014 Durango shows a key warning on the dash and won't start. Is the fob dead or is something wrong with the car?

First thing to try: hold the fob directly against the start button and try again. If it starts that way, the fob is communicating but at very low power, usually a weak or failing CR2032. Swap the battery and retest. If holding the fob against the button still gets you nothing, the picture changes. The vehicle's immobilizer or the receiver antenna could be involved, or the fob itself has failed beyond a battery fix.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2014 Durango. Can I program it myself or do I need a locksmith?

You need someone with the right equipment. The 2014 Durango smart key system doesn't have a driver-programmable relearn sequence the way older bladed-key Dodges did. There's no ignition-turn trick, no button combination that registers a new fob. Programming goes through the OBD port with professional diagnostic tools. The fob you bought online is fine to use as the hardware, but it's just an unpaired shell until someone with the right setup links it to your specific vehicle.

2014 Dodge Durango Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A military family in Mt. Helix was in the middle of a PCS move when their only key to a 2014 Dodge Durango went missing. Not lost at home, not left on a counter somewhere. It was in a U-Haul, buried somewhere inside a packed truck at a lot in La Mesa. The rental return was that afternoon. Base housing had a move-in window. Everything was timed.

They had two options: unload the entire truck in a parking lot in the summer heat, or call someone who could get them a working key on site.

I was there within the hour.

The Durango uses a smart key fob with an integrated emergency blade. I decoded the door lock mechanically to establish the correct cut, then cut a fresh blade on my machine. From there I connected through the OBD port, ran the add-a-key procedure, and registered the new fob to the vehicle's immobilizer. Tested lock, unlock, and verified the push-button start was seeing the new fob cleanly.

One thing I told them before I left: the missing key, if it ever surfaces from a moving box six months from now, will still start the car. Add-a-key doesn't wipe existing fobs from the system. If they want that old key erased later, that's a separate all-keys-lost reset, and we can do it then.

They were back to loading within 45 minutes. The dealer would have meant a flatbed, a wait for availability, and a moving day that didn't survive contact with a service department schedule. Sometimes the whole point is just not losing the day.

Dodge Durango Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Are you licensed and insured to work on Dodge vehicles?▼

Yes. EZ Car Keyz is licensed through the California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS License LCO#6792) and carries full insurance coverage. For the 2014 Durango specifically, programming a replacement smart key requires professional diagnostic equipment to communicate with the vehicle's immobilizer system. That's not a job for a general handyman or an uncertified locksmith who bought a generic tool.
