Out in Bressi Ranch, late on a weeknight, I got a call from a guy who had been clicking his Durango fob in a parking lot for twenty minutes. Not a dead battery situation. The truck was starting fine with the key, but the remote had gone completely dark. Lock button, unlock button, panic, nothing.
He had already swapped the CR2025 himself. Smart move, wrong result.
I pulled up and popped the fob open on the hood of my van. The battery contact on the positive side had a hairline crack in the trace running to it. Not visible until you look close under a light. The battery was making intermittent contact at best, and the circuit had finally given up entirely. A cracked board trace is one of those failures that a fresh battery will never fix.
On a 1999 Durango, the fob is a standalone remote. It does not carry the transponder function. The immobilizer reads from the key blade side. So his truck was always going to start. The remote just went dead.
I built up a replacement fob using the factory FCC ID listed for this generation, programmed it to the vehicle on site, and walked through all three buttons with him watching. Lock, unlock, panic. All live. Took about thirty minutes from the time I parked.
He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a couple of days out and wanted him to leave the truck with them. For a remote replacement. I did not say much about that. The work spoke for itself.
