I got a call late on a weeknight from a guy parked at a rest stop just outside Sweetwater in National City. Long-haul trucker, between loads, first pickup of the next run was a couple hours out and early in the morning. His 2011 Durango would not respond to the fob at all. Not a dead battery situation either. He had already swapped in a fresh CR2032 and got nothing.

When I pulled up I could see he had been at it a while. The fob was already open on the center console.

I tested the fob first. The battery was fine and seated correctly. The issue was in the fob itself, not the cell. The circuit board had failed. I built up a new fob from a blank I had in the van, programmed it to the vehicle through the OBD port, and tested every function: remote lock, unlock, the liftgate release, and confirmed the vehicle started. Then I checked the insert blade operation since that blade does real work on a Durango and I wanted to make sure the pivot was solid before he drove off.

He was back on the road in under an hour. The dealer had been his first call. Closed. He did not even bother looking for another one after that because he knew what that answer was going to be anyway.

When someone is stuck at a rest stop at night with a schedule that does not bend, dealer hours are a non-factor. What matters is someone picking up the phone and showing up with the tools to fix it right there.
