2013 Dodge Durango
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2013 Dodge Durango Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Over in Blossom Valley, a diesel mechanic on his lunch break had a 2013 Dodge Durango with a smart key fob that had stopped talking to the truck entirely. No response, no lock, no unlock, and the push-button start wasn't seeing the fob at all. He'd already ruled out the battery. He called the dealer.

They told him Wednesday. Drop it off, wait for a callback. Three days out.

He fixes engines for a living. He wasn't losing three days over a key.

He called me and I met him at the muffler shop where he works, right there in Lakeside. He was still in his work shirt with grease on his hands. Lunch break wasn't long.

I connected through the OBD port and ran the fob registration procedure through the vehicle security system. The fob itself was fine physically. The stored key data had gone stale, which happens on these, and the module was no longer recognizing it as paired. The process has a timed security access window built in, so you can't rush it. About 25 minutes start to finish, most of that just waiting on the system to process.

He cranked it on the first try. Walked back inside before his lunch hour was even up.

He didn't say much. Just nodded, the way mechanics nod when a fix actually works. He knew what the dealer quoted him and he knew what he paid me instead. I didn't need to explain the gap.

The irony of a mechanic calling a locksmith isn't lost on me. But key programming is a specialty tool job, and most shop techs aren't carrying the equipment. It doesn't make them bad mechanics. It just means this one's mine.
