Out in Old Escondido, the streets are narrow and the driveways are short, so I usually end up parked at the curb with my gear on a rolling cart. That's exactly how it went on a warm Tuesday afternoon when I met a Durango owner who'd been putting off getting a second key for about two years.
He had one working fob, no spare, and a trip coming up. He didn't want to think about what happens if that one key goes down on the road. Smart call. Getting a spare made before you're stranded is a completely different job than getting back into a locked car with no keys at all.
I pulled up the vehicle, confirmed the key type against his VIN, and got to work. The fob for this Durango is a 5-button smart key, factory FCC ID on the fob printed right on the back. I had the correct blank already on the cart. Cut the emergency insert blade to his vehicle, then connected to the OBD port and ran the programming sequence through my key tool. The immobilizer accepted the new key on the first pass. I walked every button with him standing there -- lock, unlock, liftgate, and the remaining functions -- then had him use the door handle to confirm proximity detection was picking up correctly, and start the engine twice to confirm the transponder side was solid.
Thirty-eight minutes from the time I opened my car door to the time I closed it. He had two working keys in his hand instead of one. He mentioned the dealer quoted him several days out for an appointment and a number that made him pause. For him, calling me was mostly about time. The savings were just a bonus.
