Out in the Bayside area of Imperial Beach, I got a call from a guy who'd been sitting on a dead Durango fob for about two weeks. He'd already tried the obvious thing: pulled the fob apart, put in a fresh CR2032, clicked it at the car. Nothing.
The dash was throwing a key-not-detected warning every time he got close to the door. He could still get in using the mechanical backup blade tucked inside the fob housing, but the push-button start wasn't seeing the fob and he was having to do a workaround just to get the engine going. He'd called the dealer and they told him the next available appointment was weeks out.
I pulled up to his place in Bayside and started at the fob itself. The CR2032 he'd put in was a no-name cell from a convenience store and it was reading low on my tester. Swapped it for a quality battery, reseated the contacts, and ran through the fob buttons. Still no handshake with the vehicle.
At that point it was a programming issue, not a hardware issue. I connected through the OBD port with a tool that handles the gateway layer on these newer Dodge platforms, accessed the RF hub, and re-registered the fob to his VIN. The whole sequence took under thirty minutes once I was set up.
Walked every button, checked keyless entry on both front doors, confirmed the push-button start was reading the fob correctly. He had a fully working key before I left the driveway. The dealer would have gotten to it eventually. Eventually wasn't working for him.
