They're in the same housing but they're two separate systems.

Hardware stores can cut the blade shape, but they can't program the transponder. The truck won't care how perfect the cut is if the chip isn't enrolled. That's the part that requires the right programmer and the right procedure for this specific vehicle.

For a 2010 Durango, this isn't the kind of job that needs secured-gateway credentials or NASTF-level access -- that layer applies to newer vehicles. What it does need is a programmer that properly handles the immobilizer protocol for this generation, reads the security data, and registers the new key to the vehicle.

My 2010 Durango starts fine but the remote buttons stopped working. Do I need a whole new key?

Start with the battery. The remote head key takes a CR2032, and when it gets low, the remote functions go first while the transponder still reads well enough to start the truck. That's why the engine keeps running even when the buttons are dead.

Pop the fob open, swap the CR2032, and test all four buttons. If the range comes back, you're done. If one or two buttons still don't respond after a fresh battery, that's usually a worn contact pad inside the fob housing. Shell replacements are available and the transponder transfers over. If none of that resolves it, then we look at whether the fob needs to be re-paired.

I lost both keys to my 2010 Durango. Is all-keys-lost harder or more expensive than making a spare?
