2005 Dodge Durango Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Out in Old Town National City, a delivery driver flagged me down in a parking lot. He had been running packages all morning out of his 2005 Dodge Durango, and somewhere between stops his only key gave out on him.
Not slowly. The plastic head had been cracking for weeks and he kept ignoring it. That morning the blade snapped at the base when he tried to work it into the ignition. He was standing there with the fob half in one hand and a blade fragment stuck in the cylinder. Truck full of packages. Schedule already behind.
The first thing I did was pull the blade fragment from the cylinder without damaging the lock. That part takes patience and the right extraction tools, but once it was out, the lock turned fine. The transponder chip inside the cracked fob housing was still intact and readable, which was the lucky part. Because I could pull the existing transponder data from the broken key, I did not have to run a full all-keys-lost procedure. That saved time.
I decoded the lock, cut two fresh key blades to match, transferred the working chip into a new shell for one key, and programmed the second key to the vehicle. Forty minutes, give or take, and he walked away with two working keys instead of zero.
He mentioned a dealer had quoted him close to what some people around here pay for rent on a parking space. We came in well under that. But honestly, the dealer comparison was secondary. What mattered was that he made the rest of his route.
