Out in Old Town National City, a delivery driver flagged me down in a parking lot. He had been running packages all morning out of his 2005 Dodge Durango, and somewhere between stops his only key gave out on him. Not slowly. Because I could pull the existing transponder data from the broken key, I did not have to run a full all-keys-lost procedure. That saved time.
I decoded the lock, cut two fresh key blades to match, transferred the working chip into a new shell for one key, and programmed the second key to the vehicle. Forty minutes, give or take, and he walked away with two working keys instead of zero.
He mentioned a dealer had quoted him close to what some people around here pay for rent on a parking space. We came in well under that. But honestly, the dealer comparison was secondary. What mattered was that he made the rest of his route.
