1997 Hyundai Elantra
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: Can you delete a lost remote from my 1997 Elantra so it no longer works on the doors?

On a car this age, the door lock remote system is a basic receiver setup. Depending on how the original system was configured, there may be a way to clear stored remotes and re-enroll only the ones you want active. That varies by the specific receiver unit in the car. What I can tell you: the remote on a 1997 Elantra controls door locks only. It has no role in starting the engine.

Q: Does my 1997 Elantra remote head key have a hidden emergency blade?

On a 1997 Elantra, the key blade is the primary and only mechanical key. There's no hidden secondary blade tucked inside a smart fob the way newer vehicles work. The blade attached to or folded into your remote head unit is what you use for the ignition and the door lock cylinders. If that blade is worn, broken, or missing, we cut a replacement to your vehicle. That's the whole job.

Q: My 1997 Elantra starts fine but stalls right after. Could that be a key or security issue?

On a mid-1990s vehicle like this, a start-then-stall symptom points toward something worth diagnosing on site before assuming it's the key. Some vehicles of this era did carry an anti-theft element, and while the 1997 Elantra's ignition key does not require chip programming in the way modern keys do, that symptom can still involve a security-related component. It can also be a fuel, ignition, or sensor issue with nothing to do with the key at all.

Q: The key turns hard in the ignition on my 1997 Elantra. Is that a key problem or an ignition cylinder problem?

Could be both, could be one. A worn key blade and a worn ignition cylinder tend to wear together over time on older vehicles. A blade that's been copied a few times, especially if it was cut from a worn original, can be slightly off and start binding in an aging cylinder. First thing I check: whether the key operates the door lock smoothly. If the door lock is stiff too, the blade itself is suspect.

1997 Hyundai Elantra Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Got a call out to Richland in San Marcos from a guy who'd been watching key videos online for a while. He had a 1997 Elantra, older car, and the remote head unit had seen better days. The blade was worn and the remote wasn't doing much for the door locks anymore.

He told me he almost called the dealer, then thought about it and realized a mid-90s Hyundai wasn't exactly a dealer-level job. Smart man.

I cut a replacement blade to match his existing key, checked the fit in the ignition and both door locks, and confirmed it cycled clean. Then we looked at the remote side. On a car this age, the remote is a basic door-lock transmitter, nothing more. No chip, no immobilizer handshake, no countdown timers. Simple system that does exactly what it was built to do.

He drove off with a key that worked the way it was supposed to. The whole job happened in his driveway, which is about as convenient as it gets for a car that's been around since the late 1990s.

Hyundai Elantra Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to handle a lost key situation on a 1997 Hyundai Elantra?▼

Call a mobile locksmith before you call the dealer or a tow truck. On a 1997 Elantra, there's no transponder chip in the ignition key, which means no immobilizer programming and no dealer PIN retrieval involved. A replacement blade can be cut to your vehicle using the key code or by decoding one of your locks on site. We come to you in Richland or anywhere in San Marcos, cut the key, and you're done.
