Out in Buena Creek, around 1am on a weeknight, a guy texted me because his only fob had gone completely dark. His 2016 Elantra was sitting in his driveway and the car wouldn't acknowledge the key at all. No response from the door handles, nothing from the start button. When I got there he was standing in the driveway with the fob in his hand, pressing it out of habit. I asked how long since he'd changed the battery. He couldn't remember. I opened the fob on the hood of my van before I even touched the diagnostic equipment. The CR2032 was original, and one of the battery contact tabs had a slight inward bend, probably from being dropped. I reset the tab, dropped in a fresh CR2032, and the car woke right up from the door handle touch.
We didn't need to register anything. The fob was already paired. It just wasn't making solid contact with its own battery.
I still walked every button, checked both door handles, and verified the start button before I packed up. He'd been ready to pay for a tow and a dealer visit. What he actually needed was a battery contact fix at 1am in his own driveway.
