I was over in Del Mar Village when I got the call. The owner of a 2005 Elantra had a key that had been working fine, then started acting up about two weeks after a locksmith had made him a copy. The car would start in the morning without any issue. By afternoon, sometimes it would crank and immediately cut out. He had already replaced the fob battery twice thinking that was it.
When I got there, he handed me the key. The blade looked right. The fob shell was correct. But when I checked the transponder against what the immobilizer on this car expects, the chip programming was off. Straightened it, seated a fresh CR2032, and walked him through locking and unlocking from across the parking lot so he could see the difference.
He had no idea the first locksmith had cut a corner on the chip side. The car never threw a warning light. It just got unreliable in a way that was hard to pin down until you actually read the key.
