2024 Hyundai Elantra
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: The dealer said I have to tow my Elantra in for a new key. Is that true?

It is what dealers default to, but it is not your only option. Hyundai owners who call the dealership with a dead or lost key get told to tow the vehicle in, and sometimes to plan on purchasing more than one fob while they are there. I have heard versions of that story from multiple Elantra owners. Mobile locksmith work sidesteps all of it.

Q: What do I need to show you to prove I own the vehicle?

A valid photo ID and your registration or title. I verify the VIN from the dashboard plate or the door jamb sticker to confirm I am working on your car. Same standard a dealer would hold you to, done on site in a few minutes with no backend authorization required.

Q: My 2024 Elantra shows a key warning on the dash even though the fob is right there. What is going on?

This one shows up on Elantra forums more than people expect. When the car throws a key-not-detected warning with the fob present, the first thing to check is the CR2450 battery. This generation uses a larger cell than older Hyundai fobs, and a battery that tests okay on a basic meter can still be too weak to sustain the proximity signal at the antenna range the car expects.

Q: Can I buy a replacement fob online and just have it programmed?

You can, with one caveat: the fob has to match the factory ID for your specific vehicle. Bring the fob to me and I can verify it before you commit to anything. Programming a mismatched unit wastes the trip. If it is the right fob, professional diagnostic equipment pairs it to the car's immobilizer on site. There is no button sequence or ignition trick on the 2024 Elantra smart key system.

2024 Hyundai Elantra Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a woman in Eden Gardens, right there in Solana Beach, about her 2024 Hyundai Elantra smart key. She described it perfectly before I even pulled up: crack along the seam, button pad worn to a shine, and the emergency blade sitting loose in its slot instead of clicking firm.

She had already called the dealer. They quoted her a full replacement fob programmed to the car. She said she nearly went through with it, then thought to ask whether anything inside was actually broken.

Nothing inside was broken. That was the whole point.

I met her in the driveway. The fob was doing everything it was supposed to do. The car was recognizing it, the start button was reading it, and when I held it close to the door handle the lock response was immediate. The board was fine. The shell was just done.

I transferred the working electronics into a replacement housing, seated a fresh CR2450, pressed the new button pad into place, and verified the emergency blade fit and function. Total time in the driveway was about twenty minutes.

She saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer wanted for a brand new programmed fob. The car never knew anything changed.

Hyundai Elantra Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I'm locked out with no spare key. Can you come to me in Eden Gardens?▼

Yes, that is exactly the call I take. You stay with the car, I come to you in Solana Beach. I carry the equipment to handle a 2024 Elantra on site, including cutting a working emergency blade and doing any immobilizer work the job requires. You do not need a tow, you do not need a ride to a dealership, and you do not need to wait for a service department to open.
