Out in the Viejas Area near Alpine, a guy called me from the lakeside picnic area just off the highway. He had been at the water with his family, set his fob down somewhere in the mix of towels and coolers, and by the time they were packing up it was gone. Once I had the PIN, I ran the all-keys-lost sequence. It erased every fob that had ever been paired, including the one at the bottom of the lake or wherever it ended up, and opened the immobilizer for new registration. I cut and programmed two fobs on site. He wanted a spare this time, which was the right call.

The car started right there in the lot. He looked at the new fob for a second like he was deciding whether to trust it, then just pocketed both of them and said he'd see me never, which I took as a compliment.

The dealer had quoted him a tow, a multi-day wait, and a number that made him wince. He paid a fraction of that and was back on the road before the afternoon was over.
